WINTER DRIVING SAFETY
A message for older road users in Wairarapa
Kia ora koutou,
As the cooler months settle in across the Wairarapa, we want to take a moment to check in — whether you’re behind the wheel or out on a mobility scooter. Winter brings real challenges on the road, and a little extra care can make a big difference.

Winter Driving Tips
• Allow extra time — frosty mornings mean icy roads, especially in rural areas
• Clear all windows and mirrors before setting off — never drive with limited visibility
• Increase your following distance, particularly on wet or frosty surfaces
• Drive to the conditions, not the speed limit — slow down on bends and hills
• Check your tyres regularly — good tread depth is critical in wet weather
• Keep your fuel tank at least half full in case of unexpected delays
• Let someone know your route if travelling rural roads in poor weather
🛔 Mobility Scooter Users
Winter conditions affect scooter users too. Wet surfaces reduce traction, and shorter daylight hours mean you may be out in low light. Ensure your scooter has working lights and wear bright or reflective clothing. Visit Mobility Wairarapa for advice and support.

Support Services for Older Drivers
The Wairarapa Road Safety Council, in partnership with Age Concern Wairarapa, offers a range of free programmes to help older drivers stay safe and confident:
• Staying Safe Workshops — a free classroom course for drivers aged 70+, covering road rules and safer driving practices
• CarFit Clinics — in partnership with the AA, a 20-minute vehicle check to ensure your car is adjusted for your comfort and control, we are looking to bring these back, so if it is something you are interested in, let Paige know during your coffee mornings or catch ups.
• Driver Licensing Support — guidance for those aged 75+ navigating medical checks and licence renewal
