MOTORCYCLES & SCOOTERS

Motorcycle and Scooters

Over the past five years, motorcycles have remained one of the most vulnerable road user groups across both Wairarapa and the wider Wellington region. Rural roads, winding hill routes, intersections, changing weather conditions, and higher-speed open roads all increase risk for riders. Locally, common contributing factors continue to include loss of control on bends, speed, inexperience, and unfamiliarity with regional roads. Wairarapa’s popular riding destinations such as the Remutaka Hill corridor and scenic back-country routes attract both local and visiting riders, making ongoing rider education essential. Nationally, Waka Kotahi reports motorcyclists are consistently over-represented in deaths and serious injuries compared with other road users.

Our Motorcycle Safety Education programme works collaboratively with ACC, NZTA Waka Kotahi, Ride Forever, Motorcycle Collective and a range of local riding groups to help riders build confidence, improve roadcraft, and stay safer for life. Through coaching, skills workshops, community rides, awareness campaigns, and rider networking, we aim to support everyone from new learners through to experienced riders returning to biking. Safe riding starts with skill, attitude, preparation, and a connected riding community.

Key Trends in Wairarapa (2020–2025)

  • Motorcycle crashes in Wairarapa continue to be concentrated on rural open roads and state highways, where higher speeds, sweeping bends, narrow shoulders, and changing road surfaces increase the likelihood and severity of incidents. This is particularly relevant across Masterton, Carterton, and South Wairarapa districts.
  • Recreational and touring motorcycling remains strong, with Wairarapa’s scenic routes attracting local riders and visitors from Wellington and beyond, especially during weekends, public holidays, and summer/autumn riding seasons when traffic volumes are higher.
  • Remutaka Hill Road (SH2) continues to be one of the region’s most challenging corridors for motorcyclists, with ongoing crash history linked to tight corners, variable weather, heavy traffic, and rider error or loss of control.
  • Across the wider 2020–2025 period, common contributing factors remain loss of control on bends, speed for the conditions, overtaking misjudgement, and rider inexperience or unfamiliarity with rural roads. These trends align with national motorcycle crash patterns.
  • Riders aged 40+ continue to make up a significant share of the recreational riding community, reflecting the popularity of return-to-riding and leisure motorcycling among experienced adults with higher-capacity motorcycles.
