Wairarapa has one of the highest proportions of older adults per capita in New Zealand, and with people living and driving longer, it's more important than ever to support safe and confident mobility. We're seeing a growing number of older drivers and mobility scooter users across the region, and ensuring their safety and independence is a key focus for the Wairarapa Road Safety Council.
We proudly support Age Concern Wairarapa, who lead a range of valuable programmes designed to help older adults stay safe on the road and remain mobile for as long as possible. Together, we promote initiatives like:
Age Concern run a driver education programme aimed at supporting older people to be as safe as possible while out on the roads. They also offer information and support to older people who are renewing their driver licence or are no longer driving.

A free, classroom-based course for drivers aged 70+, helping participants refresh their knowledge of road rules, safer driving practices, and alternative transport options.

In partnership with the AA, CarFit helps older drivers adjust their vehicle for optimal comfort, visibility, and control. A 20-minute check by trained volunteers ensures drivers are “fitted” properly to their cars.

Mobility scooters offer freedom and independence, but safety is crucial. In recent years, crashes involving scooters have led to serious injuries and fatalities.
