FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Wairarapa Road Safety Council
Wairarapa drivers are being reminded that new 50 km/h speed limits take effect on two short sections of state highway on Monday 19 October, and that average speed safety cameras start operating on SH2 between Te Mārua and Brown Owl in Upper Hutt on Wednesday 21 October.
The Wairarapa Road Safety Council is urging locals, and especially commuters who travel over the hill to Wellington, to know what is changing before they set off next week.
The Wairarapa changes follow local requests and a six-week public consultation by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA). NZTA estimates each change will add only 2 to 5 seconds to a trip.
Two town approaches drop from 70 km/h to 50 km/h on Monday 19 October, with a third change in Masterton expected before the end of the year.

The current limits stay in force until the new signs are installed and uncovered.
NZTA says lower speeds make the biggest difference where highways pass through residential areas and town approaches, and where people are turning, walking, cycling and reaching local services.
Wairarapa commuters will meet average speed safety cameras on SH2 Upper Hutt from Wednesday 21 October.
The cameras cover the 4 km stretch between Te Mārua and Brown Owl. Fourteen people were killed or seriously injured in crashes there between 2015 and September 2025. An NZTA survey on the 80 km/h section found about 75% of drivers were over the limit, and about 35% were doing 100 km/h or more.
Average speed cameras time a vehicle between two points and work out its average speed. Drivers are ticketed only if that average is over the limit, so a brief speed-up or slow-down does not matter — the whole stretch does. Signs reading "average speed camera area" are placed ahead of the cameras.
NZTA says international experience shows these cameras could cut deaths and serious injuries on suitable New Zealand roads by around 48%. At two Auckland sites already running, more than 99% of drivers now travel at or below the limit.
Other things to know on the commute:
• SH2 Māoribank, Upper Hutt: a 50 km/h limit has applied since mid-September through the largely residential area just before SH2 reaches the Hutt River, heading south.
• SH2 Remutaka Hill: planned night closures for maintenance are scheduled for the first half of 2027. Dates and updates are on NZTA's SH2 Remutaka Hill road night closures page.
The easiest way to keep ahead of changes is to sign up for NZTA's free email updates at nzta.govt.nz.
• Weekly state highway roadworks emails — upcoming roadworks and closures in your area.
• Speed review project updates — news on the Wairarapa speed limit reviews, including when the SH2 Masterton north change takes effect. A consultation summary report is on NZTA's Wairarapa speed limit consultation page.
