School Zone Speed Signs

School Zone Speed Signs Now in Place Across Wairarapa — Here's What Drivers Need to Know

Speed limit signs are now fully installed outside every school in the Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa districts. The message is simple: slow down, stay alert, and expect enforcement.

From the start of the 2026 school year, a variable speed limit of 30km/h applies outside every school across the Wairarapa during drop-off and pick-up times. The signs are now up, the limits are active, and Police are enforcing them.

The new limits are part of each district’s Speed Management Plan, approved by the Director of Land Transport under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024. The goal is straightforward — to make the areas around our schools safer for children and their families.

“This is about our kids getting to and from school safely,” says Holly Hullena of the Wairarapa Road Safety Council. “These aren’t just signs on a pole — they represent a real commitment from councils and communities across the Wairarapa to protect our most vulnerable road users. We want every child to arrive home safely, every single day.”

What this means if you’re driving

- If you drive past any school in the Wairarapa during school hours, here’s what you need to keep in mind:

- The speed limit drops to 30km/h on roads near schools during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. The variable signs will be flashing to let you know when the limit applies.

- Outside those windows, the normal speed limit applies — but stay alert regardless. Children can appear unexpectedly near schools at any time.

- Watch for children on footpaths, at crossings, and crossing between parked cars. Kids can be unpredictable, so give yourself time to react.

- Don’t park in no-stopping zones or block visibility near crossings. Every bit of clear sightline helps keep kids safe.

- Leave a little extra time in your morning and afternoon routine so you’re not feeling rushed through a school zone.

“Most drivers are doing the right thing, and we appreciate that,” says Holly Hullena. “But 30km/h isn’t just a number — at that speed, a child hit by a vehicle has a much greater chance of surviving than at 50km/h. A few seconds of patience from a driver could save a life.”

Enforcement is happening — don’t risk it

New Zealand Police are actively enforcing the new school zone speed limits across all three Wairarapa districts. Drivers caught speeding in a school zone face fines and demerit points. The risks simply aren’t worth it.

The Wairarapa Road Safety Council is encouraging all drivers to treat school zone speed limits with the same seriousness as any other road rule — because the consequences of getting it wrong here are especially severe.

More speed changes coming across the region

School zones are just the beginning. All three councils will be rolling out further speed limit changes throughout the year, starting with roads around the townships of Masterton, Carterton, Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough, followed by coastal settlements and rural unsealed roads. Communities will be kept informed as timelines are confirmed.

“We’re asking everyone in Wairarapa to get on board with these changes,” says Holly Hullena. “Slowing down near schools isn’t an inconvenience — it’s one of the easiest things we can do to look out for each other. Let’s make Wairarapa’s roads safer together.”
